ECAP Seminar: Henning Gast

May 23, 12:30 - 13:30

Latest results from the AMS experiment on the International Space Station

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a detector designed for precision spectroscopy of cosmic rays that was installed on the International Space Station in May 2011. With dimensions of 5x4x3 cubic meters and a weight of 7.5 tons, AMS is the largest cosmic-ray spectrometer ever built. I will summarize the results from the first 6.5 years of operation of AMS. The energy spectra of positrons, electrons, anti-protons, and light nuclei measured by AMS challenge existing theories for the origin and propagation of cosmic rays.
