ECAP hosts the 20th Astroparticle School
From September 4th to 12th, we had the pleasure of hosting early-career scientists from around the globe for the 20th Astroparticle School. By necessity breaking with a long tradition, the event did not take place in Obertrubach-Bärnfels. Instead we enjoyed the amenities of the Waischenfeld Research Campus (Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits).
Jonas Glombitza (ECAP) led a session on detectors and machine learning in astroparticle physics, Stefano Gabici (APC Paris) discussed cosmic ray acceleration, Frank Ohme (AEI Hannover) introduced gravitational waves, and Anna Franckowiak (RU Bochum) covered neutrino astronomy.
In addition to these lectures, we had a series of invited talks. Tim Linden (Stockholm University) presented on indirect searches for dark matter, Laura Fabbietti (TU Munich) shared insights into neutron stars and the hyperon puzzle, Sylvia J. Zhu (DESY Zeuthen) summarized recent developments in gamma ray astronomy, and Jochen Weller (LMU Munich) introduced us to cosmological studies with the Euclid telescope.
A key aspect of the school was the participant presentations, where each attendee had the opportunity to present their own research. They also got to build and improve their proposal writing skills during a Proposal Writing Workshop led by Claudio Kopper (ECAP) and learned the basics of graphics design and vector graphics from Karen Terveer (ECAP).
Evenings were a mix of socializing and learning, with two evening lectures: Marc Hempel (PT.DESY) gave an overview of research funding in Germany & Europe and Martin Rongen (ECAP) shared his passion for amateur astrophotography.
Lastly, everyone got to enjoy a free day on Monday, exploring the nature in the area or closeby cities.
A big thank you to all participants, speakers, and organizers for making it an unforgettable week. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Astroparticle School!
