2013/01: Waiting for Dark Matter to light up

Self-annihilation of dark matter particles in space can lead to emission of gamma rays with an energy close to the mass of the dark matter particle. For the first time, a dedicated search for such a “smoking gun” line-like signal is carried out at the highest gamma-ray energies accessible to date. Using the H.E.S.S. gamma-ray instrument in Namibia, researchers were able to place stringent limits on line-like gamma-ray emission in the energy range between ~500 GeV and ~25 TeV, complementing recent limits obtained with the Fermi-LAT instrument at lower energies.
