Two ECAP research groups participate in a significant German consortium dedicated to the development and construction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). This initiative aims to establish a next-generation observatory, featuring sites on both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, to enhance the detection of high-energy gamma rays.
The scientific objective of CTAO is to investigate cosmic radiation sources, potential dark matter candidates, and cosmological relics from the Big Bang.
FAU’s involvement is focused on critical technical components. Researchers at the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP) are contributing expertise in the development and testing of advanced photo-sensors and readout electronics for the telescope cameras. This work is essential for achieving the high sensitivity required for this observatory, specifically targeting the high recording rates necessary for accurate signal acquisition.
Furthermore, the FAU team is engaged in data processing and analysis, contributing to the systematic search for specific astrophysical signals, such as those originating from supernovae and compact objects.
This collaborative effort, involving multiple German research institutions, underscores the importance of integrated expertise in modern astrophysics. The ECAP groups are funded with 1.2 Million Euro over the next 3 years.
